If you make a lot of your own beauty care and cosmetics, chances are you have most of these ingredients on hand. Luckily they’re rather inexpensive, overall, and last a very long time. Since the amounts called for are so small they have a tendency to last a very long time.

You’ll Need:
1/4 tsp cinnamon oil
1/4 tsp clove oil
1 tsp ground sage
1/4 cup arrowroot
1/4 cup powdered orris root
1/4 cup water

Combine all ingredients except water in a small bowl, stirring well. Slowly add water, forming a paste, until the toothpaste is at the consistency you prefer.

Arrowroot is a starch obtained from the rhizomes (rootstock) of several tropical plants. Orris root powder has anti-inflammatory properties, it helps relieve nasal and chest congestion as well.

  1. This recipe sounds great! I’ve not been happy with homemade toothpastes made with baking soda because of the taste. The addition of cinnamon oil will definitely made a positive difference.

While I’ve been happy with our Indianapolis dentists, I would be happier to have a home remedy for tooth care to tell them about next time I visit!

  2. I make my own toothpaste . It works well & doesn’t taste bad but every once & a while you need to switch it up a bit so I think I will try this. Thank you Liss.

  3. ok I think this will be my next recipe to try. We are really tired of the “western” mentality of adding chemicals, dyes and artificial junk into every product. I am glad to see we aren’t the only ones

  4. Oh, yeh!!! This looks perfect, for me, though I may add a but of coconut oil.. Maybe, lol.

Between the cinnamon & clove oils, this with kill ASL the nasties, soothe sensitive teeth & gums, & freshen breath, the whitening power of the sage is a great bonus, too! I do believe I’ll be making a batch of this up, tomorrow morning!

    Thank you for sharing this!!!

  5. To answer the questions above, orris root is the rootstock of an Iris, that is ground into a powder. You can get them on amazon or at health food stores.

Arrowroot Powder is often used in cooking for thickening suaces, dips, soups,. We use it when we have to cook something on a low temperature and still thicken it, whereas if you use cornstarch, you have to boil it to get it to thicken properly.
