What is Cellulite?

Cellulite is actually caused by fat deposits just below the skin. I actually got the idea to make this cream from watching a national geographic special about a tribe of women who intentionally eat high carbohydrates and direct fat into their butts and thighs (yes, on purpose!) in order to gain weight in certain areas, it’s called Leblouh.

These Mauritanian women are kept in huts, fed high starch foods constantly while other tribal women massage and direct the growing fat cells to grow and flourish.

It certainly got me thinking, if a person can gain fat deposits in certain areas by directing it with massage, it stands to reason that it can be removed that way as well.

Certain types of essential oil are well known for their anti-cellulite properties. Those oils include:

  • Juniper
  • Fennel
  • Grapefruit
  • Rosemary
  • Sage
  • Lemon
  • Cypress

Massage stimulates the lymphatic flow, increasing blood flow to the area. The addition of 1 or more of the above essential oils will help your body reduce cellulite naturally. Each oil has it’s own useful properties, for example Juniper oil is an overall tonic.

It helps prevent tissue degeneration, reduces fluid retention, encourages Glomerular filtration (which helps to release sodium, potassium and chlorine from the body), and it works in anti-cellulite creams by stimulating the connective tissues of the skin, firming them, while increasing circulation which promotes dissolving of fat cells.

Rather than go too far into detail about each and every essential oil on the list, here’s our simple recipe for homemade anti-cellulite cream:

MYO Anti-Cellulite Salve

You’ll Need:
1/4 c. Almond Oil (or grapeseed oil)
40 Drops Juniper Oil
3 drops Lemon Oil
1 Tbs Coconut Oil
1 Tbs Beeswax Pastilles or grated beeswax

Combine the carrier oil (almond/grapeseed/etc) in a small saucepan over the lowest heat setting possible, add coconut oil and beeswax and stir until dissolved.

Remove from heat and cool 5 minutes. Add the essential oils and then pour into a small 1/2 pint jar.

Let set an hour or so to solidify. Alternatively you could just make a massage oil without the beeswax as well.

Apply to problem areas twice per day (morning/night) massaging vigorously for at least 10 minutes with each application.

Always massage in a direction towards your heart, rather than away from your heart. This will increase your circulation (and your results!).

I noticed a major difference within about 5 days and for those of you that don’t know me personally, I once weighed over 200lbs, so yes, I **HAD** cellulite.

Other Cellulite Reduction Tips:

Obviously exercise is going to reduce problem areas, but did you know that wearing excessively restrictive clothing can cause cellulite to accumulate in problem areas.

Tight panties can cause ridges/dimpling in the buttocks, tight jeans can cause dimpling in the thighs, etc.

Drinking more water can greatly reduce cellulite as well as your body’ cells need ample water to move/dissolve fat deposits.

Dry brushing the skin is well known for helping to improve circulation and greatly reduce the appearance of cellulite in problem areas. Remember, always brush towards your heart!

dry brushing

Bathe in lukewarm water, cooler water tightens your skin and gives it a more toned appearance, reducing the bulge of cellulite.

Where to Buy Essential Oils?

Essential oils can be purchased at your local herb shops, vitamin shops, Whole Foods, Earth Fare, Natural Foods store, as well as on Amazon. Be sure that you are using true essential oils and not fragrance oils. Essential oils are derived from the plants themselves whereas fragrance oils are synthetic chemicals with no health benefits whatsoever.
