By far, the easiest Homemade Hair Detangler Spray is a simple mixture of your favorite brand of conditioner. If you use store-bought conditioner, this method is a great way to use up the leftover conditioner that seems to cling to the very bottom of the bottle.

3 T. conditioner
1 1/4 c. water

Measure the conditioner into a clean empty sprayer/spritzer, add the water, seal and shake well to combine. Spritz this on the hair liberally while it is still damp.

I personally have very long hair and it can be frustrating trying to get a comb through, especially if I happen to go to bed with damp hair. I’ve checked into the store-bought versions of detangle spray only to discover they are absolutely loaded with nasty chemicals such as , Behentrimonium Methosulfate , Sodium Benzoate , Dimethicone , Hydroxyethyl Behenamidopropyl Dimonium Chloride , Polysorbate 20 , Cetearyl Alcohol , Trisiloxane , Ceteth 10 , Laureth 4 – if you’re not familiar with these, you can check out the health hazards here on EWG’s Skin Deep Database.

I’ve opted out of using mass chemicals on my children and myself and have found several simple recipes that I’ve had great success with.

Aloe Vera Gel Detangler
1 c. water
1 tsp Aloe vera gel
1-2 drops of glycerin
2 drops lavender essential oil
10-15 drops grapefruit seed extract

Combine all the ingredients together in a spritz bottle, shake well to combine. Use as you would any detangler spray.

From Tangled to Tame . . . Recipe #2

  • 12 ounce or larger spray bottle
  • 1.5 cups water
  • 3 tablespoons marshmallow root
  • 2 tablespoons Organic conditioner of choice
  • 10+ drops of essential oil of choice (completely optional)

Place marshmallow root in a small saucepan with the water and simmer for 20 minutes or so until it forms a gel. The longer you heat it, the thicker it will become. Strain it and add the remaining ingredients. (This strains well with recycled pantyhose stretched over a bowl).
