Scouring Cleanser Recipe

This is mildly abrasive. To make it more abrasive, add more whiting, 1 tablespoon at a time, until desired abrasiveness is achieved.

1/2 cup Ivory Soap, Grated
2 teaspoons borax
1 1/2 cups hot water
2 to 5 teaspoons whiting

Mix ivory, borax and water in a large plastic bowl until soap and borax are dissolved. Add 2 to 5 teaspoons whiting, checking the consistency and degree of abrasiveness after each teaspoon.

Pour into a squeeze-top container. (These are available at walmart or dollar stores in the shower supply aisle for about .40 )

To use, shake well. Squeeze some of the cleanser onto a damp cloth or sponge and wash. Rinse and dry. For heavily soiled areas, apply cleanser and let it set 30 minutes or more, Scrub off, rinse, and repeat if necessary.

👩‍🍳 About the Author

Melissa "Liss" Burnell started Budget101.com in 2001 because she needed it to exist — not because she saw a market opportunity. She was feeding a family of four on under $200 a month, and people kept asking how, so she started writing everything down.

That turned into 25 years of recipes, debt-busting strategies, and DIY content — including figuring out how to make 128 loads of laundry detergent for less than $2. Millions of families have quietly used this site to stretch a dollar without feeling like they're sacrificing anything. She's also the author of two bestselling budget cooking ebooks, available on Amazon.
