    To make a cleaning paste, mix two tablespoons of baking soda with one tablespoon of water. Rub the soleplate gently with your paste, and try not to get any paste in the steam vents. With a damp cloth, wipe away the buildup and paste.

    As the recipe indicates above, to descale a steam iron, pour equal amounts of vinegar and water into the reservoir, turn the iron onto medium heat setting and allow it to steam until all the vinegar evaporates.

    I’ve read some sites that recommend using CLR to clean a steam iron, but the company states this isn’t a good idea as it can and likely will cause permanent damage to your iron and may stain your clothing too.
