How to Grow Ginger

If you want to ensure you’re consuming quality ginger, you can grow your own at home. Soak a piece of ginger root in warm water overnight to prepare it for planting. Ginger is actually a rhizome, not a root, so it grows best when planted near the surface.

Since the roots of the ginger grow horizontally, you’ll want to use a shallow, yet wide plant pot filled with rich, well-drained potting soil. Place the piece of ginger rhizome that has been soaked overnight onto the soil. Be sure the eye bud is pointing up, then cover it with an inch or two of potting soil. Water it lightly.

Ginger is a shade-tolerant plant, so it does not require full sun. It’s also a cold-tolerant plant. It normally takes eight to ten months for ginger to mature.
