Magic Shell Ice Cream Topping is a delicious chocolate sauce that “magically” hardens the second it hits the ice cream. Here are 2 different tried and true ways of making this magical deliciousness!
A word of warning, please don’t use margarine in this recipe, use butter. In fact, we advocate against the use of margarine ALWAYS. Butter is concentrated milk fat whereas margarine is an artificial emulsion of non-dairy fat with skim milk, water, flavorings, and colorings. It’s mostly made from plant oils and it’s beyond NASTY.
Homemade Chocolate Shell Ice Cream Topping
Here are the 2 ways we’ve made our own Copycat “Magic” shell ice cream topping:
1 pkg (6oz) chocolate chips
1/2 stick butter
1/4 cup Mazola oil (Do not substitute any other kind!)
In a double boiler melt the chocolate chips and butter together. Once the mixture is completely melted and smooth, add the Mazola oil. Whisk gently until completely combined. Cool.
To use, pour the topping over your favorite ice cream and it will harden.
Quickie Magic Shell Ice Cream Topping
For an even Quicker Magic Shell
1 c. Chocolate Chips
3/4 c. Coconut Oil
Melt together in a glass bowl in the microwave, 20 seconds at a time, stirring in between, just until it’s melted and fully incorporated but NOT hot.
Pour while warm over ice cream and it will harden instantly.
You can easily customize these by adding a touch of flavored oils, such as cherry, rum, pineapple, etc

the recipe says to only use mazola oil. mazola has a variety of oils from vegetable to corn to canola. which kind should i use?
we love this stuff on our ice cream. but the price at store is ridiculous.
i must say i am so happy to bump this gem!!!!!! i love this sauce!!! thanks
Thanks for this magic shell recipe. I just made it using some mint chocolate chips I got on sale at Christmas and stored in the freezer. It was quick to make and hardened up nicely when put on the ice cream.
I had both chocolate and vanilla ice cream, and opted for the chocolate. Dangerously good!
Had about half left, wonder about how to store it?
