This Italian hero crescent ring is loaded with all the flavors of your favorite Italian sub but feeds a family quite nicely! Layered with cold cuts including salami, ham, and pepperoni and provolone cheese, this Italian sub crescent ring really hits the spot.
If you prefer a spicy Italian hero crescent ring, pepper it with delicious spicy hot pepper rings and roasted red bell peppers, both completely optional, of course, but highly recommended!
Crescent rolls, if you’re not familiar, are premade refrigerated dough available at the supermarket. It’s very handy for making a number of dishes, like this delicious sausage gravy breakfast pizza! If you don’t have access to the handy cans of crescent dough, that’s okay too! We’ve provided a recipe at the bottom of the page for you to make your own.
Italian Hero Crescent Ring
You’ll Need:
2 cans Crescent rolls (8oz each)
8 slices provolone cheese, cut in half
1/2 cup roasted red bell peppers, well-drained (from a jar)
1/3 lb Salami (slices)
1/4 lb ham (slices)
1/4 lb pepperoni slices
1/2 cup well-drained hot pepper rings (from a jar)
a Handful of Diced Onions (optional, but we love them!)
Freshly Ground Black Pepper
Unroll the crescents, separate them and arrange the triangles on a pizza pan, overlapping the edges of the dough. At this point, the dough will look like sunshine on your baking pan.
Layer the ingredients in the order listed, starting with the cheese slices
and ending with spicy hot pepper rings. If you’d like at this point you can add a final layer of provolone cheese.
Season with freshly ground black pepper. We generally don’t add any salt because the cold cuts contain plenty on their own!
Once properly seasoned, fold over the dough tucking it in under the bottom layer of dough, like you’re making a bed.
Bake at 375° F for 18-22 minutes until the ring is baked throughout and golden brown. Let the Italian hero ring cool for about 5 minutes before slicing and serving. This can be cut into thin slices for a party as well.
Homemade Crescent Roll Dough
Here is a “make your own” recipe for crescent roll dough. I’ve never tried to make it ahead of time and freeze it, but if you do, make sure you wrap it securely and freeze it PRIOR to the first rise.
You’ll Need:
1/3 cup lukewarm Water
2/3 cup lukewarm milk
1/3 cup softened butter
1/3 cup sugar
1/2 tsp salt
2 tsp active dry yeast
3 1/3 cup flour
2 eggs, beaten
In a bowl combine the sugar, salt, yeast and half of the flour mixing well. Add the water, milk and melted butter, mixing well. Add remaining flour and beaten eggs, mix until it forms a dough.
Knead the dough for about 10 minutes and let rise in a draft-free, warm place for about 45 minutes.
When your dough is ready, split it into two balls and lay it on a floured surface.
Roll each half out into a large circle.
Use a pizza cutter & cut in like a pizza to make triangles.
Crescent Roll Dough using a Bread Machine
If you happen to have a bread machine, you can use the dough setting to do all of the work for you.
Combine and then dump all your dry ingredients into the bread machine first. Then pour in your water, milk, and butter.
Beat your eggs well and then pour on top. Set the bread machine on the dough cycle and let it do its magic!
