If you love the taste of the County Fair, you can bring it home with you. You don’t have to pay $5 for a single funnel cake- you can make an entire batch for less than $1.00!

Fair season is fun, but with all that’s going on in the world right now, we’re opting out of the usual fall treat. Instead, we’re having a carnival of sorts of our own, of all our favorite friends and our favorite fair foods. One of my favorites happens to be Funnel Cakes!

What does funnel cake taste like?

If you’ve never had the pleasure of munching on a funnel cake, let me explain what it tastes like. It’s like someone took donuts and pulled them apart into slivers of deliciousness and then dusted them with powdered sugar and a dash of cinnamon.

To make these just combine the ingredients, mixing well. Heat oil to 350F and pour the batter in thin streams into the oil, allowing the funnel cake batter to overlap here and there. These are originally called funnel cakes because people often use a funnel to pour the batter through to create the stringy puffs of batter.

The following recipe is meant to be prepared ahead of time and placed in the pantry until needed or given as a gift.

You’ll Need:
1 c. all-purpose flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon

Layer all ingredients in Jar Or vacuum seal bag.

Attach Tag/ Directions:

Combine the following:
1 egg
3/4 cup milk
1 cup Mix

Blend well.

Pour 1/4-1/3 c. batter into a funnel (pour batter into hot oil from funnel bottom)

Fry 1 minute on each side (or until golden brown) Turn only once or they will be greasy.

Homemade Funnel Cakes

Can you Freeze these for later?

Much like donuts, funnel cakes are best enjoyed fresh. It’s not recommended to refrigerate or freeze them for later. They become soft, mushy and rather bland, kind of like reheated french fries.

If you love fair foods, try these delicious homemade corndogs, and fried dough and mini funnel cakes. We’d love to hear what your favorite fair foods are in the comments below!

  1. :2cents: If you don’t happen to have a funnel on hand, you can pour the batter into a ziploc baggie and snip one corner off, drizzle the batter into the grease. Be careful it doesn’t splatter onto the bag!

You can also use an empty squeezable container like a ketchup or mayo

  2. we went to a craft show they were having in town and the kids spyed the funnel cakes of course. they begged for them and i remembered seeing them on the site and promised them when we got home we would make some and the where very happy with that. and thank god they where good!!!

, and it saved me a lots of money!!!!!

  3. it is so much fun to watch the eyes of my family when i come up (after being here on with a new low cost treat. My sis-n-law thinks I’m insane, lol, until she eats what I make. Then my husband, who has a sugar addiction & diabetes 2, gets this glassy glittery look in his eye that says “I can’t wait to try these and get into my next sugar high”.

And fyi, I don’t let him do it often.

Most of the time he is very diligent about counting his carbs.

And then comes my oldest son who is staying with us, and he gets this huge smile that says “YES” food.

And the youngest son at home…he says “Sugar! you know I don’t like sugar!” all while he wolfs down whatever sweet concoction I have found to experiment with.

It will be fun to see how he reacts tonight when I make these for dessert!

    • What is the best oil temperature?

Most food frying is about 350 degrees. You can use a candy thermometer, but do not let it touch the bottom of the pan or you will get false readings.

  4. Its the beginning of the holiday season for us..what better way to start it than with funnel cakes as a surprise treat for the family tonight.
