Japanese Steakhouse White Sauce

Bring the flavors of your favorite Hibachi grill to your own table with this delectable, mouth watering Japanese Steakhouse White sauce recipe!

This recipe is best if made a day ahead of time, but as long as the flavors have at least 15 minutes to marry, this delicious yum-yum sauce will be the perfect accompaniment to your do it yourself hibachi meal. It is very important that you do not substitute the ingredients in this recipe. You cannot use Miracle whip or reduced calorie “dressing” in place of the Hellmans. We do frequently use Aldi brand “Hellmans” and it’s similar but does not offer the exact flavor unless we use HELLMANS.


They say necessity is the mother of all inventions, One evening my oldest son hounded me half to death for dinner at Sumo’s (our favorite Hibachi Grill/Steakhouse). Unfortunately, the price per plate is not my favorite price to pay when dining out, so I told him we’d give it a run and see what I could come up with.

You’ll Need:
1-1/4 cup Hellmann’s Real Mayonnaise
1/3 cup water
1 teaspoon tomato paste
1 tablespoon melted butter
1/2 teaspoon (slightly rounded) garlic powder
1 teaspoon sugar
1/2 teaspoon paprika
sprinkle of cayenne pepper

Combine all of the ingredients in medium bowl, whisking well to fully incorporate, ensuring the sauce is well blended and smooth. As we mentioned already, it’s best if you make this sauce up a day ahead of time as the flavors will be much more enhanced, but since we all know the majority of meals are thrown together last minute, at least prepare the sauce 15 minutes prior to serving and refrigerate.

It’s best served at room temperature so it doesn’t prematurely chill the food.

This can last up to 2 weeks in the fridge with no issue as far as spoilage is concerned, but honestly, it’s never made it past 3 days in mine.
