Homemade Make ahead biscuits

We love fresh biscuits, but some evenings, it’s too much of a pain to mix up a batch. Here is a simple baking powder biscuit recipe that you can make and freeze. When you’re in the mood for some fresh hot biscuits, simply take out enough for that meal, pop them in the oven and in 15-17 minutes, you’ll have fresh biscuits.

You’ll Need:

  • 1/2 c. shortening
  • 4 c. all purpose flour
  • 2 T. Sugar
  • 2 T. Baking Powder
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 1 1/2 c. milk

Mix the flour, salt, sugar, and baking powder until well blended, cut in shortening until mixture resembles fine crumbs.
Add the milk, mixing until incorporated, but don’t over mix as it will make the biscuits tough.

Turn dough onto floured surface, knead lightly. Roll or pat 1/2 inch thick and cut out. Place the biscuits on a floured tray and place them in the freezer for a couple hours or overnight. Once firm, place them in a vacuum seal bag, seal.

Recipe makes 18-20 biscuits.

To Use:

  • Remove as many as you want to cook
  • Place them touching slightly on an ungreased cookie sheet
  • Place them in the oven, (Turn it to 450F) bake for 16-18 minutes or until golden brown. No Need to preheat the oven.
  • Do Not thaw before cooking.

  2. with only 2 of us at home, making a batch whenever we want biscuits always seems wasteful –to me they’re never quite as good leftover. This recipe will solve the problem nicely — thanks so much from a newbie!

  3. i am going to make these tonight and freeze for the week. it is alot of work some times to make biscuits from a mix when its late. now i will just go in my freezer take out what i need and just put it in the oven.

      Ivonna, have you ever thought about taking the leftovers and using them in other recipes? meatloaf, you can mix bread crumbs with hamburger meat and patty out to make the meat go further and you can freeze the patties with the bread in them it helps them to stay together better, I for one love cold biscuits esp. with a cup of hot cocoa.

      I bet you could find lots of uses for leftover biscuits, I know there are several for leftover bread…get creative the next time you have leftover biscuits!! Have a Blessed Day!!

  4. thank you for this tip…i usually freeze already baked homemade biscuits, but this is much better….i plan to make these and have in freezer so when any of my grown children wants biscuits, i’ll have them on hand to give them for their house…..(we have 7 grown kids)……:smile1:

    i needed a biscuit recipe that i couldn’t mess up easily.

    now i just need a decent straight-edged circular object for a biscuit cutter. what works best? should i just break down & buy a biscuit cutter, or would a large floured cup or mason jar do the trick?

      A floured glass would work but you really want the other end to be open too, sometimes it creates a vacuum. The next time you use a can of fruit or vegetables, save it, peel the label off, open it at both ends, wash it out and use that. It works great and makes perfect size biscuits.

  6. be sure to not throw out your unused flour after making the biscuits. i have a lady friend who taught me to invest in a good flour sifter and use the left over flour from making biscuits, after sifted, and use it for seasoning meats.

  7. i am definitely going to be trying this recipe. this will save me from having to feel obligated to finish the whole batch. :lets-eat: just pop them out of the freezer a couple at a time.

  8. I like having mixes like this in my pantry. I’m in wheelchair and need help with cooking so with the jar ready to go, I don’t have to wait on someone to stop by to help me to get everything out or down again so I usually will have 2 jars available ready just to mix with the liquid, make and freeze.
