🦀 Easy Crab Stuffed Mushrooms
Having grown up in New England, I’ve always had a soft spot for anything seafood-related. Unfortunately, that love affair can get expensive fast—unless you learn how to stretch ingredients.
That’s where canned crab meat comes in. It’s affordable, easy to find year-round, and surprisingly tasty when dressed up just right.

Of course, if you’re lucky enough to live near a seafood market, fresh crab will elevate the flavor even more.
And here’s a little frugal tip from someone who knows: Lobster bodies and legs (not the claws) are often sold cheaply (we’ve scored them for as little as 25¢ each!).
A little lobster meat thrown into the mix takes these to another level of decadence without blowing your budget.
Whether you’re using canned crab or going full fancy with fresh seafood, these buttery, savory, stuffed mushrooms are ridiculously easy to make and taste like they belong at a fancy party (without the fancy price tag).

🍄 Why You’ll Love This Recipe
- Budget-friendly but feels gourmet
- Quick prep—ready in under 30 minutes
- Great for parties, holidays, or just a seafood fix
- Easily adaptable (try shrimp, lobster, or even imitation crab)
🛒 Ingredients for Homemade Crab Stuffed Mushrooms
6–9 large white or baby bella mushrooms
3 slices Swiss cheese (divided)
2 Tbsp grated Parmesan cheese
½ sleeve Ritz crackers, crushed
½ stick butter (4 Tbsp)
2–3 Tbsp crab meat (canned or fresh), use the rest to make crab rangoons
3 Tbsp chopped red onion
½ tsp Old Bay Seasoning
1 tsp minced garlic
Optional Topping:
2 Tbsp melted butter mixed with ¼ tsp minced garlic for drizzling before baking

🔪 Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F.
- Wash the mushrooms and gently remove the stems. Set caps aside and finely chop the stems.
- Melt butter in a medium saucepan.

- Sauté the chopped stems and onion until softened (onions should be translucent).

- Add crab meat. Stir and sauté for 30 seconds.
- Add garlic and Old Bay seasoning. Mix well.
- Stir in crushed crackers. Let it absorb for a minute.
- Chop up 1 slice of Swiss cheese and stir it into the mixture along with the Parmesan.

- Stuff each mushroom cap with the mixture, pressing it in gently.

- Top each with a small square of the remaining Swiss cheese slices.
- (Optional but recommended!) Drizzle melted garlic butter over the tops.
- Bake for 6–10 minutes or until cheese is melted and bubbly.
🧊 Storage & Reheating Tips
- Make-Ahead: Prepare and stuff the mushrooms, then refrigerate until ready to bake.
- Leftovers: Store in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Reheat in a toaster oven or air fryer for best texture.
- Freezer-Friendly? Not really. The texture of mushrooms tends to get weird after freezing.
🧂 Ingredient Swaps & Substitutions
- No crab? Try shrimp or finely chopped imitation crab.
- No Swiss? Provolone or mozzarella work well too.
- Want it spicier? Add a dash of cayenne or a squirt of sriracha to the filling.

🤔 FAQ
Can I use fresh crab meat instead of canned?
Absolutely! It will taste even better. Just make sure it’s fully cooked before adding.
What kind of mushrooms should I use?
Large white mushrooms or baby bellas work best for stuffing. Pick ones that are roughly the same size.
Can I make these vegetarian?
Sure—leave out the crab and add sautéed spinach, chopped walnuts, or even artichokes instead.
🧑🍳 Pro Tips
- Don’t overbake—mushrooms release moisture and will get soggy if left in too long.
- Want extra crispy tops? Broil the last 1–2 minutes.
- Hosting a party? Double the batch—they disappear fast!
