It uses basic pantry staples, stirs together in minutes, and bakes up with a sturdy crumb that works well beside soup, chili, or a pot roast. If you like keeping dry mixes on hand, you might also want Beer Bread Mix #2 or Irish Soda Bread Mix for another quick-bread option.

Stored airtight in a cool, dry cupboard, this dry mix keeps best for about 6 months as an estimate because baking powder is the shortest-lived ingredient. Once baked, the loaf is best within 1 to 2 days at room temperature, or refrigerated and used within 3 to 4 days. For general leftover timing, USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service leftover guidance recommends using refrigerated leftovers within 3 to 4 days.

Beer Bread Mix Recipe

You’ll Need:

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 4 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt

Whisk the flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt together until the mix looks even throughout. Transfer it to a tightly covered jar, container, or zip-top bag and label it before stashing it in the pantry.

Expert Tip: When you mix in the beer, stir just until the flour disappears. Quick breads turn tough when you beat the batter into submission, and nobody needs a loaf with the texture of a doorstop.

To Use:

Combine 1 batch of Beer Bread Mix with 1 can, 12 ounces, of beer. Use dark or light beer, but skip lite beer for better flavor and structure. Grease the loaf pan well, stir the batter together, and bake as directed: 1 large loaf at 350°F for 1 1/4 hours, or 2 small loaves at 400°F for 45 minutes.

This mix makes one hearty loaf for slicing at the table, or two smaller loaves that work well for gifting, freezing, or setting out with a bowl of stew. A large loaf gives you about 12 slices, while two small loaves yield about 24 thinner slices total, depending on how generously you cut them.

Store the dry mix in an airtight container in a cool, dry place for up to 6 months for best quality, estimated from the baking powder shelf life. After baking, cool the bread completely before wrapping it. Keep it at room temperature for up to 2 days, or refrigerate it for up to 3 to 4 days. For longer storage, freeze the baked loaf tightly wrapped for up to 3 months.

Notes: This is a quick bread, not a yeast bread, so you do not need to knead or let it rise. If you want a stronger malt flavor, choose a darker beer. If you want a milder loaf for serving with breakfast or soup, use a standard lager.

Frequently Asked Questions about Beer Bread Mix

Can I use self-rising flour instead of all-purpose flour in Beer Bread Mix?

It’s better not to. Self-rising flour already contains leavening and salt, so using it here would throw off the rise and the seasoning. If all-purpose flour is what you have, stick with the mix as written so the loaf bakes up evenly instead of tasting salty or ballooning in the pan.

What kind of beer works best for beer bread?

Use a regular 12-ounce beer, either dark or light, but skip lite beer. Dark beer gives you a deeper, slightly maltier flavor, while a standard lager keeps the loaf milder. The biggest win is choosing something with enough body to bring flavor to the bread instead of disappearing into it.

Why did my beer bread turn out dense instead of light?

The usual culprits are old baking powder or overmixing. Stir just until the dry pockets are gone, because quick-bread batter should be mixed gently, not beaten smooth. If your baking powder has been open a while, replace it before blaming the beer.

Can I make Beer Bread Mix ahead for gifts or pantry storage?

Absolutely. Pack the dry mix in a tightly sealed jar or bag, label it with the baking directions, and keep it in a cool, dry cupboard. For the best rise, plan to use gifted or stored mix within about 6 months rather than letting it linger until the baking powder loses steam.

How full should I fill the loaf pan when making beer bread?

Fill the prepared pan with all the batter for one large loaf, or divide it evenly between two small loaf pans. Try not to overfill small pans, because quick breads need headroom to rise and bake through without spilling or forming a gummy center.

Can I freeze baked beer bread?

Yes, and it freezes well once it has cooled completely. Wrap the loaf tightly, then freeze it for up to 3 months. Sliced bread is especially handy here because you can pull out only what you need instead of thawing the whole loaf.

What goes well with beer bread?

Serve it with hearty meals that like a sturdy slice on the side, such as chili, soup, stew, or barbecue. It also works toasted with butter the next morning, which is a nice bonus for a loaf that started as a dinner side dish.

Can I turn this mix into two mini loaves instead of one large loaf?

You can, as long as you divide the batter evenly and bake the smaller loaves at 400°F for 45 minutes, just as directed. Smaller loaves are useful when you want quicker cooling, easier gifting, or better portion control.

How do I know when beer bread is done baking?

Look for a well-browned top and a loaf that feels set rather than squishy in the center. A toothpick inserted near the middle should come out clean or with a few dry crumbs, not wet batter. If it still looks damp inside, give it a little more time before you pull it.

Can I add cheese, jalapenos, or herbs to beer bread?

You can, but keep add-ins moderate so the loaf still bakes through properly. About 1/2 to 1 cup total add-ins is a practical limit for one batch. If you want a flavor-packed version built around that idea, take a look at Cheesy Bacon Jalapeno Popper Beer Bread.

  1. i make my beer bread with 3 Cups of Self-rising flour, 3 Tbsp. sugar mixed together. Add one can/bottle of beer.

Melt 1/2 to 1 whole stick of margarine (1/4 – 1/2 Cup) in stone loaf pan. Pour dough into melted margarine pan; melted margarine will make a nonstick coating on the bottom and sides of pan as well as make a great butter flavored crust. Bake at 375* for 40-45 minutes. Other drinks can be substituted for the beer: 7-Up, Rootbeer, Coke, Mountain Dew, etc.

Or, garlic, herbs or even cinnamon and sugar can be incorporated or sprinkled on top for flavored Beer Bread. I make this every time I serve spaghetti.

  2. this was absolutely terrific. i bake the dough in a buttered pyrex casserole dish (covered) at 400 degrees for 1 hour. Next time I will add some fresh herbs, this is a fool-proof recipe.
