Cultured Buttermilk (Make your own)

1 c. powdered milk
4 c. water
1/2 c. commercial buttermilk
Pinch of salt

Mix nonfat dry milk and water until dissolved. Do not chill. Stir
in buttermilk and salt. Let stand at room temperature overnight.
Stir until smooth. Chill before serving. Keep in covered container
in refrigerator. Good for cooking too.

Reserve 1/2 cup for your next batch starter.

  1. Another way to make your own live cultured buttermilk is to mix ⅓ cup of store-bought buttermilk with live active cultures into 1 cup fresh milk. Cover loosely and culture in a warm spot (70°-77°F) for 12-24 hours, until thickened. Refrigerate. It’s basically yogurt starter.
