You’ll notice that one of the ingredients is Filé powder, also called gumbo filé, which is a spicy herb made from the dried and ground leaves of the North American sassafras tree. It’s the most commonly asked about ingredient for those who aren’t familiar with traditional cajun cuisine.

    • what is file’ powder ? I have never heard of it & where can I get it? thank you

filé powder is also known as gumbo filé – it’s a spicy herb that is made from dried and ground leaves of the sassafras tree. It’s frequently used in creole cooking. Filé powder also thickens whatever it’s in and is used in place of okra when okra isn’t in season.

You can purchase it online here: Buy Filé Powder
