As far as frugal gifts or budget gifts go, these fun hot chocolate (mix) filled ornaments have been one of the best received gifts we’ve ever given. We knew the kids would love them, but had no idea how much the adults would appreciate them too. They make a great addition to college care packages as well.
The plastic ornaments we used were found at Walmart for .97 each, but they can be purchased online at Amazon for less.

You’ll Need:
Plastic Ornaments
Mini Marshmallows
Funnel
Cocoa mix in varying flavors (if desired)

Here’s a simple, yet rich hot chocolate mix recipe:

1 1/2 c. sugar
1 c. Powdered Coffee Creamer
1 1/2 c. Unsweetened Baking Cocoa
3 c. Powdered Milk
1/2 tsp salt

Combine all the ingredients in a large gallon size ziplock-style bag, seal and shake well to thoroughly combine. Alternatively, there a number of homemade hot chocolate or flavored coffee/cappuccino mixes available here.

You’ll want to add 2-3 Tbs of the mix per ornament. This is a very rich chocolate blend so 2 Tablespoons should suffice for a large mug.

The easiest way to add the mix is to make your own paper funnel, simply wrap the paper into a funnel shape and tape it to hold.

Add the cocoa mix, then top with up to a Tablespoon of colored vanilla chips, chocolate chips, crushed peppermint (for mint cocoa), Andes candies (for double chocolate mint cocoa), etc. You’re limited only to your imagination! Keep in mind any addition is going to add a bit more sweetness to the recipe, so go easy on them.

Add a little tag to the top of the ornament, (attaching with a piece of ribbon) with the directions, “Add mix to mug, fill with hot water, stir and enjoy.”
