Put together homemade athlete costumes on a budget using thrifted basics, team colors, and a few sport-specific details for Halloween. Yield/Result: 1 athlete costume
Budget101 Price BreakdownNot calculated Not calculated because the final cost depends heavily on which athlete you choose and what clothing or gear you already own. Keep hems short, shoes secure, and props lightweight to reduce tripping. Avoid long trailing fabric and make sure masks or helmets do not block vision. Use makeup instead of a mask when you need better visibility and comfort. If you build a padded costume, test it early for heat and movement before wearing it out.

Equipment

Scissors
Hot glue gun or fabric glue
Safety pins
Needle and thread for quick hems or strap fixes
Marker or fabric marker
Measuring tape
Stapler for cardboard props

Materials

  • Athletic clothing or thrifted basics in the right sport and team colors
  • Jerseys sweatpants, shorts, leggings, warm-up pants, leotards, or swimsuits depending on the athlete
  • Socks in knee-high tube, ankle, or skate styles as needed
  • Foam batting, or pillows if you're making a sumo wrestler costume
  • Athletic tape fabric tape, or hook-and-loop strips for quick costume adjustments
  • Cardboard poster board, or lightweight craft foam for numbers, logos, belts, or signs
  • Face paint or costume makeup if the look needs sport-specific details
  • Reflective tape or glow sticks for nighttime visibility
  • Lightweight props such as a ball medal, towel, surfboard cutout, boxing robe belt, or pennant

Instructions

  1. Choose the specific athlete costume you want to make, such as baseball player, boxer, figure skater, headless football player, quarterback, soccer player, softball player, sumo wrestler, or surfer.
  2. Pull together the base outfit from clothing you already own or thrifted pieces in the right colors and shape for that sport.
  3. Add one clear sport-specific detail such as a jersey number, boxing gloves, shin guards, shoulder pads, a medal, or a surfboard prop.
  4. Try the full costume on and test walking, sitting, and carrying a candy bag before Halloween night.
  5. Secure loose parts with safety pins, hand stitches, or removable adhesive so they stay in place while moving.
  6. Choose soft, lightweight props that won't block movement or become hard to carry.
  7. Add reflective tape or glow sticks so the costume stays visible after dark.

    👩‍🍳 About the Author

Melissa "Liss" Burnell started Budget101.com in 2001 because she needed it to exist — not because she saw a market opportunity. She was feeding a family of four on under $200 a month, and people kept asking how, so she started writing everything down.

That turned into 25 years of recipes, debt-busting strategies, and DIY content — including figuring out how to make 128 loads of laundry detergent for less than $2. Millions of families have quietly used this site to stretch a dollar without feeling like they're sacrificing anything. She's also the author of two bestselling budget cooking ebooks, available on Amazon.
