Canker sores are notoriously evil, they seem to spawn quickly and for no good reason at all. Here’s a simple home remedy that actually works, but be forewarned, don’t go lighting up a match just because you saw the photo, or you’ll have more than a canker to contend with!

As a kid, grandmas favorite remedy for canker sores was HOT sauce, the hotter- the better, as far as she was concerned. Since I’m not into liver or tonsil transplants, I prefer this method that I’m about to share with you.

Now, before you begin here is a fair warning, this remedy is not for wussies, sissies or those that still call their mamas when they scrape their knee. This one stings, aka, it’s not pain-free. But if you’re still with me, here’s my favorite do it yourself remedy for a tough cancer sore.

You’ll need a good ol’ fashioned Match. Not a lit one, mind you, a regular match. Now, press it directly onto the annoying canker sore, pretty hard, if it doesn’t sting, you aren’t doing it right. Chances are if you’re pushing the match into the canker sore correctly, you’re starting to drool a little, now you know you’re doing it right.

Let it set on there for a second, remove the match, take a peek. If it’s still rounded and white, get a new match and repeat. If the canker sore is rather large it can take a few matches before the white head on the canker sore is completely gone.

Now, rinse your mouth with warm water and avoid whatever food caused the canker sore to begin with, for me it’s salt & vinegar chips or gobstoppers (which we lovingly refer to as “Canker sores” because you can’t eat them without getting one!) by the next day, your canker sore should be completely gone.

Note, do NOT use this method on a Cold Sore- that’s an entirely different animal altogether.

👩‍🍳 About the Author

Melissa "Liss" Burnell started Budget101.com in 2001 because she needed it to exist — not because she saw a market opportunity. She was feeding a family of four on under $200 a month, and people kept asking how, so she started writing everything down.

That turned into 25 years of recipes, debt-busting strategies, and DIY content — including figuring out how to make 128 loads of laundry detergent for less than $2. Millions of families have quietly used this site to stretch a dollar without feeling like they're sacrificing anything. She's also the author of two bestselling budget cooking ebooks, available on Amazon.
