Every year I make the hubby and kids a huge homemade meal. Last year I made chicken saltimboca and lots of other yummy things. I have been doing this for 5 years and the kids and hubby love it.
Usually my parents bought me a huge gift basket as a "Its okay you're single since you still get stuff today" They've been doing it since I was 13. But since I moved out I'm probably going to not celebrate it. That or I'll make my room mate a really cute valentines day card and she'll feel all uncomfortable until she realizes I made one for our other roommate too!~
I like to start the morning with heart shaped pancakes. Dinner is usually heart shaped pizza. Dessert/snack will be heart shaped brownies, with pink frosting and sprinkles
Valentine's Day is a very special day in our house. #2 son was born on Feb. 14th. Our home school group also always has a skate party on valentines day except this year it's on Saturday so it got moved to Thursday. We do special things all day for Valentines day and our son chooses the menu for the day. He also gets to choice a movie to watch in the home theater. We'll get lots of movie treats for that night also. And we never do school work on that day.
Unfortunately Valentine's day is not a day of celebration for me. My Dad died on Valentine's day and that was 22 years ago. I always tried to make it a special day when my kids were young but my heart was never in it. Now that they're grown and on their own DH and I just fix a nice dinner or go out to eat. He did get me flowers and candy a few times but knows that it's just not a day I can get excited over. Strange how something can stay with us for so long and put a damper on a particular day.
We don't do anything to special. Sometimes my DH will take us out to eat, or I'll just fix a special dinner for them. When I say us that includes the kids. They go everywhere with us, no matter what.
A nice dinner at home is what we usually do too. We try to do special things for each other threw the year.

I was the same way when my boys were growing up.
The last couple years we've taken the kids geocaching. What better way to say I love you then by hiking on a trail somewhere, lol. This year we're visiting a state park. I usually get the kids a little box of chocolates (one of the small 6-8 piece boxes) and leave it on their pillows with a note (from the DOG). lol
