I am not the greenest person I know. Not even close. But I'm trying to do better for my family's health and the well-being of the planet. Here are some small steps I've taken lately...

  • Gradually, I am removing the majority of plastic items from my house. These include dishes, cups, utensils, pitchers, tupperware, water bottles, etc. The plastics pose health risks AND, when recycled, IF recycled, they become lesser products that are often unused or unusable.
  • Shopping for the least amount of packaging possible.
  • Buying canned soft drinks instead of plastic bottled, and recycling the cans.
  • Using cloth shopping bags when possible.
  • Buying second-hand 99% of the time.
  • Driving less. Much less.
  • Making my own laundry and dish soaps, as well as household cleaners, from natural products.

I have to admit I still use the plastic but will reuse as much as possible for storage. Use the canvas bags for shopping. Save papers for the boys to do craft things with. Recycle what is recycleable in the area. Started a compost this fall to keep from trashing or down the garbage disposal with the food scraps. Make my own cleaners, soaps. Planted trees in the spring. Not using paper towels for cleaning or paper napkins have switched to cloth items. Giving "green" items to the family for Christmas-cleaning items, etc. don't know if they will like but oh well

I only shop once a month and i also take my coolers with me and take them right in the store and leave them while I shop. When I check out they load my cold stuff into the coolers, no bags used at all. We carry along our own covered drink containers and fill those instead of using the cups at the fast food checkout or using bottled drinks. I'm not the best by far in going green but I try a little at least!
