Ways to keep the heat down at night

I keep my heat set at 57* at night. How do I do it?
- Use more blankets. We average three per bed: a comforter, a throw, and an afghan.
- Wear socks
- Make heat packs. Pour regular, cheap rice in a tube sock. TIe it off. Heat in the microwave for 30 - 60 seconds (do it slowly!). This stays warm for a long time and is great for spot warming in bed!
- Wear a stocking cap. Just like Scrooge! Wearing a hat greatly increases your own body heat, because you lose lots of heat through your head.
This may seem extreme to some, and should NEVER be attempted by those with compromised immune systems, or folks with elderly housemates or those with babies in the house. But healthy children and adults are fine with chilly nighttime temps, and lowering to the mid- to upper-50s can save you a hefty chunk of change on your heat bill.
