It was c-c-c-cold last night! In an effort to cut expenses where I can, I am keeping the heat at 58 at night. We can wear warm pajamas and throw on extra layers to keep warm, so the colder indoor temps don't bother us at night. I don't know precisely how much I am saving by doing this, but I know I'm saving, and that's what counts. Last year, I kept the heat at 55 at night. I might get back there this year, too, once it starts dipping into the teens.
I made my own cream of ___ soup mix today. It took me 5 minutes to mix up 9 cans' worth of cream soup mix. Cream soup sells for 65 cents a can here. 65 cents x 9 cans = $5.85. The ingredients to make the mix cost me no more than 50 cents. Savings = $5.35 for 5 minutes' work. That translates into an hourly wage of $70.20*** to make my own cream soup mix. Yeah, definitely worth that 5 minutes this morning!
***I got the idea of figuring the hourly rate for things from the Tightwad Gazette. I love that series.
Other frugal thing: This saves LITERALLY pennies, and I am just doing it as a challenge to myself....NO LIGHTS until after 8 pm today. At all. Now, it gets dark by 6, but we have volleyball to attend, so we won't be home till after 8 anyway. My children have a terrible habit of using the lights when they really don't need them, so this new effort is an attempt to curb that habit. So far, I've only had to turn off one light.
Anything else frugal today? Food was all from scratch, and dinner includes leftovers, so that's frugal. I spent nothing and will only put 5 miles on the car today.
