It was c-c-c-cold last night! In an effort to cut expenses where I can, I am keeping the heat at 58 at night. We can wear warm pajamas and throw on extra layers to keep warm, so the colder indoor temps don't bother us at night. I don't know precisely how much I am saving by doing this, but I know I'm saving, and that's what counts. Last year, I kept the heat at 55 at night. I might get back there this year, too, once it starts dipping into the teens.

I made my own cream of ___ soup mix today. It took me 5 minutes to mix up 9 cans' worth of cream soup mix. Cream soup sells for 65 cents a can here. 65 cents x 9 cans = $5.85. The ingredients to make the mix cost me no more than 50 cents. Savings = $5.35 for 5 minutes' work. That translates into an hourly wage of $70.20*** to make my own cream soup mix. Yeah, definitely worth that 5 minutes this morning!

***I got the idea of figuring the hourly rate for things from the Tightwad Gazette. I love that series.

Other frugal thing: This saves LITERALLY pennies, and I am just doing it as a challenge to myself....NO LIGHTS until after 8 pm today. At all. Now, it gets dark by 6, but we have volleyball to attend, so we won't be home till after 8 anyway. My children have a terrible habit of using the lights when they really don't need them, so this new effort is an attempt to curb that habit. So far, I've only had to turn off one light.

Anything else frugal today? Food was all from scratch, and dinner includes leftovers, so that's frugal. I spent nothing and will only put 5 miles on the car today.

What a great job! You should be very proud of yourself. Wish I could handle cooler temperatures but I am such a baby and cant stand to be cold. You sure are an inspiration!

You are really comitted! Good job. I leave the heater off at night, but it has been getting soooo cold. I have been turning the heater on and off during the day. We do not have central heating which is kinda cool in a way b/c you heat up only the room you are in. Good tips Thanks

Thanks to both of you. I have to be comitted. I don't have a choice, really. This is a tough time of year for me, financially, so I have to pinch pennies hard for the next few months. There's only a few areas left to pinch, and food and heat are two of them. It's amazing what you can live without when you put your mind and effort into it, you know?
Beans you just reminded me that I need to close the vents in the office and the kids play room since neither one of those rooms is getting used at all right now.

You are really doing a good job. Two tumbs up to you.
I wish that I could keep the heat turned down. But DH has to have it up. Last year I would turn in down and he would turn it up. That was a battle --I lost that one. The lights are always out if we don't need them. I won that battle. So we are one for one. I've been saving on the cooking lately. This coming month I plan on buying from the Angel Food Net. Which will save me a little more.
