Thanksgiving is rapidly approaching and as usual, I'm trying to work in all of the little things that are so important to my family for the holiday. Tradition is huge in my house and even something as simple from switching our homemade cinnamon rolls for "just middles" - can cause an uproar with our youngest.

Like most families, everyone in the family has their own favorite dessert, which means that in order to keep everyone happy, I generally make 5-7 different kinds of pies. Apple, Blueberry, Chocolate Cream, Coconut Cream, Pecan, Banana Cream, you get the point!

This year I've created a way to save both time and money, without having all the sugar of so many desserts. I created Pie Bites, using our favorite cream pie fillings -which were made ahead of time and frozen in smaller batches to avoid waste & dessert overload.

The best part is, the desserts are super simple to make and free up tons of fridge space! Each year, although I manage to find a way to make something easier (like the pie bites), I also somehow seem to add a "new" tradition. Last year I made homemade cranberry sauce, to which my family was immediately addicted.

Here's our menu for Thanksgiving this year:

  • Deep Fried turkey (the only way to prepare a turkey!)
  • Stuffing with Apples, Sage, sausage bits
  • Homemade Cranberry Sauce
  • Steamed veggies (Broccoli, Butternut Squash, Sweet Potato)
  • Mashed Potatoes
  • gravy
  • Biscuits & Hot Rolls (yes, I generally make both, as I mentioned, the kids each have their favorites)
  • Various Types of homemade pickles
  • Cranberry relish (Gram's recipe, again a tradition we can't pass up)
  • Munchie trays of Cut up veggies & dips (usually 2-3 different kinds)
  • Cheeseball & crackers (dh's fave!)

The trick for me is to make many of these dishes ahead of time, like the biscuits and hot rolls, so I can bake just a few at a time, rather than having food overload.
