Create your own funky treasure stones using a few basic household ingredients, including some old coffee grounds! These fun stones hold a hidden treasure.

* 1 cup flour
* 1 cup used coffee grinds
* 1/2 cup salt
* 1/4 cup sand
*up to 1 cup water
* various treasures- small toys

Combine flour, coffee grounds, salt and sand. Slowly add enough water to make a stiff dough; you may only use half to 3/4 of a cup of water. Add it slowly to avoid a runny mess!

Knead the treasure dough on a smooth surface, and then break the dough into desired “rock sizes.”

Hide toys and surprises in the center of each ball of dough. Let dry 2-4 days. Once it has completely dried, it will look and feel like a rock. If you’re quite impatient and want your stones to be finished quickly, simply place in the oven at 170F for 15-20 minutes. Cool completely.

Break open the home-made rocks with a hammer to reveal the hidden treasures inside. This is lots of fun for the kids!

  1. The crafts page has a lot of good ideas for kids. I think the idea of making stones with your child is really cute and meaningful, but it seems to be more complicated than just buying them from a store!
