These wonderfully fun “exploding critters” are filled with our fizzing bath bomb recipe. Your children will be delighted to wash up after a days play with these critters which erupt into a fun foaming bath, soothing skin softener.
I created this recipe when my children were little to encourage them to wash their hands a little bit longer and more frequently. It worked like a charm, they LOVED the exploding frogs and bath buddies!
You’ll Need the following:
- 6 T. Grated Glycerin Soap
- 2 T. Baking Soda
- 1 T. Citric Acid
- 1 T. Powdered Oatmeal (grind in a blender until fine powder) or Powdered Milk
- 2 Drops Green Food Coloring
- 4 drops Peppermint Essential Oil
1 Frog or Creepy Crawly Mold (I used this one, purchased at Michaels. It’s available on Amazon.com for $1.99)
Step 1Carefully Melt the Grated Glycerin Soap. (If using the microwave be careful not to boil the soap as it adds too many air bubbles!)
Step 2 Add food Coloring to the oil, mixing well & carefully pour just enough into the mold to coat the sides. (I use a small makeup brush to spread the soap throughout the inside of the mold, making a clear coating. I use my children’s Play-dough molds or creepy crawly bugs & lizards. If you don’t have a creepy crawly mold you could pour the mixture into ice cube trays & insert plastic spiders/ bugs, for the kids to find when they bathe.
Step #3: In a small measuring cup, mix baking soda, powdered oatmeal, & peppermint essential oil, blending well. Add in Citric Acid Powder & mix to combine.
Step 4 Spoon powder into your prepared creepy crawlies, so that it is a well in the middle.
Step #5: “Top off” the mold to cover your creepy critter.
Step #6: Immediately put into the freezer to set. It takes approximately 15-20 minutes. As soon as they have set, remove them from the molds. If you fail to place these in the freezer immediately your creepy crawlies will “explode” before your children can use them.
Step #7: Toss a few into the bath with your children and watch their little faces light up with Joy as they bathe with Creepy Crawly Buddies.

Additional Gift Ideas:
* Wrap the bath Buddies up in cellophane or tissue paper & attach a cute tag.
* Place the “Creepy Crawlies” in a Jar as though they were “Just Caught” for the recipient.
Attach a Tag:
* When things are “Bugging” you, just fill the tub, drop in a couple bug buddies and make those “bugs” melt away.
* Cute as a Bug

i love this. it doesn’t have to be just for kids. with different molds and an assortment of scents these would be a nice addition to a spa gift basket.
got the recipe ok but not instructions on how to get it mixed enough to fill molds
This is a great idea. I think I will make this for my grandchildren for Christmas.
Thank you
Great idea! Thanks for sharing this.
