You are so welcome KarrieJudy! I found out that our local small chain & independently owned stores buy from local growers.

These stores also don't have the overhead (costs, expenses, payroll, etc.) that large retailers have.

I grew up with a large family. My parents had gardens and all of the children learned from them. We pick and process the crops.

One trick that I learned later was to freeze items like my asparagus on a pan after blanching them and then put them in freezer bags for long term storage with air removed. That way I can pull out what I need and not have to thaw an excessive amount. You can always push the air out of the bag before reclosing.

Now if only I could develop a good system of organzing and cleaning my freezer....

mamasmurf! mamasmurf! you have come to the right place!

i, too, am from a large family, and we also worked in the gardens and orchards.

pre-freezing is my main theme when it comes to putting up our harvest. not only can i take out a specified amount without thawing (and loosing) all of it, but it helps batter stay on vegetables (green tomatoes, squash, zucchini, etc.) without them sticking together.

as for an easy way to clean and organize your freezer, here's a fantastic article on that topic, but be sure to read the reviews and member comments below for other tips and tricks, too!!!

Good article! I like the idea of using the leftover vegetables in other dishes and maybe could even freeze them for even longer.

Aldi's is a great place for cheap produce, often better quality (in my opinion) than the mass grocers. I paid $2.99 for a pomegranate just last night, found them for .45 at Aldi's tonight. Bag of Cuties I paid $5.99 last night, Aldi's just $2.49 a bag.

Ethnic shops as well tend to have hard to find fruit/ discounted general produce. I tend to go to a little asian market for good deals on stirfry veggies and things like lychee fruit. A mexican market place nearby has some great deals on hard to find meats as well as good deals on peppers and limes.

I want to try going to a farm soon, but the only one I found recently was for parties only.
