What is Orange Extract used for

Orange extract flavor offers a considerably stronger orange flavor than orange juice. Simply put, it’s a concentrated burst of citrusy orange that can add robust flavor to your favorite baked goods (cakes, muffins, etc), sweets, homemade liquors, as well as in marinades.

Substitute for Orange Extract

If you don’t happen to have any extract on hand, you can substitute it with orange juice, orange zest, orange oil, orange liqueur, or another citrus extract.

Homemade Orange Extract Recipe

You’ll Need:
One Large navel orange
1 cup vodka

  1. Peel the navel orange and remove all white pith from the peel
  2. Dice the orange peel roughly
  3. Combine the vodka and orange peel in a sterilized glass canning jar, ensuring the peel is completely submerged.
  4. Cover and store in a cool, dark place to steep for at least 30 days.
  5. Strain the peel out. This extract can be used for up to one year

Homemade Non-Alcoholic Orange Extract Recipe

You’ll Need:
One Large navel orange
1 cup food grade liquid glycerin

  1. Peel the navel orange and remove all white pith from the peel
  2. Dice the orange peel roughly
  3. Combine the glycerin and orange peel in a sterilized glass canning jar, ensuring the peel is completely submerged.
  4. Cover and store in a cool, dark place to steep for at least 30 days.
  5. Strain the peel out. This extract can be used for up to one year

Extracts that are derived using glycerin are known as glycerites. These type of extracts have a syrupy-like consistency. The amount used in the recipe is the same as traditional alcohol based extracts.
