Wholespice Old Bay Seasoning
4 whole bay leaves
1 tsp black peppercorns
1 tsp white peppercorns
2 tsp celery seed
3 whole cloves
1 allspice berry
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp smoked paprika
1/4 tsp mustard seed
1/8 tsp freshly grated cinnamon
1/8 tsp ground ginger
1/8 tsp ground mace
Combine all ingredients in spice grinder. Grind until finely ground. Store tightly covered in dark cool place in airtight container. You can vary the spice amounts according to your taste. Take a sniff of this mixture when it’s done and add more of any of the ingredients. You can also add cardamom and nutmeg to this blend if you’d like.

So you have a lot of shrimp, eh?! Wanna share?
Just an fyi — I’m originally from New Orleans — when I’m making boiled shrimp, after adding the mix to the boiling water I add a lemon. I cut it in half, squeeze as much juice as I can into the water and drop in the rinds. THEN, I add the shrimp.
When potatoes are fork tender, the corn is done and you can serve up a good ‘ole Louisiana shrimp boil dinner! Let us know how it works out for you;-D

And crawfish…and believe it or not, when I have the funds and want to do something special…I will make the same recipe for lobster! Fabulous! Do you steam clams, oysters (I usually like mine raw), or mussels?
use the recipe! you’ll never eat any of those foods again without the spice! lol!

When I was small we lived in Florida. I remember my mother always using this seasoning when she cooked oysters, crabs or shrimp. I now live in Michigan and can not find it anywhere.
I am so glad I found that I can now make it myself. Thank you for posting this. It really brings back memories.

I so hope that you like it! Growing up in New Orleans, I learned as a wee thing to put together spice blends. The recipe for Old Bay was something that we realized we were ‘making’ all along
