Ways to keep apartment cool, please help

Having been in your situation about three years ago, I would highly recommend the window a/c unit. It cools a lot of area, and if you have a box fan, that will extend the coolness to other rooms. If you can get another box fan, it would help to send the breezes even further.

Also, something I and hubby did before we got an a/c window unit was to soak towels in room temp water and lay them on ourselves at night. The room temp water was very cooling and very soothing, and helped us to go right to sleep.
