Amalgamate
GORP (good ole raisins and peanuts) with M&Ms is an awesome trail mix, but sometimes I just crave a different flavor. So here’s a list of items that can be mixed for on-the-go treats.
Buying individual items on sale (with coupons too!) makes a larger, cheaper batch of trail mix that suits your own tastes.Nuts: Pistachios, pecans, peanuts, almonds, macadamia nuts, cashews, walnuts. These can be plain, salted, honey-roasted, spicy, etc.
Dried fruits: cherries, blueberries, raisins, cranberries, apricots, date pieces, pineapple, mango, apples, banana chips. Try freeze-dried for a crispier fruit.
Mini chips: chocolate, peanut butter, white chocolate, butterscotch, cinnamon
Other: coconut flakes, mini marshmallows, candied ginger, bite-size cookies like mini oreos, broken cookies like graham cracker pieces
Examples
These aren’t necessarily energy-packed or the healthiest for a long hike. If you just want a snack while hanging out with friends around the campfire or tailgating, then indulge.
Tropical mix: dried pineapple, papaya and/or apricot, macadamia nuts, cashews, and shredded coconut
Chocolate Peanut Butter: mini chocolate chips, pretzel nuggets with peanut butter, peanut butter cereal like Envirokidz or Reese’s
Kid Friendly: Honey Nut Cheerios, M&Ms, pretzel sticks, banana chips, chopped pecans
Apple Pie Mix: dried apple, cinnamon chips, granola or plain Cheerios, chopped walnut
Kickin Mix: Beef jerky (bite size pieces), spicy peanuts, wasabi peas -
