The Truth About Fats
Some fat is essential in the diet; it’s vital for vitamin absorption, energy and, of course, taste. The key is to choose the right kinds of fats to ensure your family’s well-being.
Minimize the amount of trans fats and saturated fats in the diet. Excess saturated fat can raise ldl cholesterol, even in kids, which increases the risk of heart disease.
trans fat does the same, plus it can lower hdl (‘good’) cholesterol. pay attention to both of these.
instead, focus on monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats as sources of needed dietary fats. according to the 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, these types of fat should make up the majority of your total daily fat intake.
Choosing a soft spread, such as I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter!®, Country Crock®, Promise® or Brummel & Brown®, in place of butter is one way to lower your saturated fat intake and still get some of your daily amount of polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats.
