Straw Bale Gardening- learn how to build your own simple, cheap garden- this works perfect for growing strawberry runners!
you can get mushroom spikes from someplace like fungi perfecti or another source to inoculate your straw bales and grow edible mushrooms as well
Position your bales (I’d put down a few layers of wet newspaper first to ensure weeds don’t grow up through the tops)
Condition the bales- 2 weeks before planting wet the bales and add fertilizer For the first six days, put down 3 cups of organic fertilizer per bale every other day, and water the bales to push the fertilizer down and thoroughly saturate the straw. On the off days, simply water the bales.
On day 10 put down 3 cups of fertilizer mix with phosphorus & potassium. I just used bone meal mixed with wood ash.
Bales should be hot & moist inside at this point.
Plant your seedlings.
When the harvest is over at the end of the growing season, you’ll have a perfect mulch/compost to fill pots and planters all winter long for more yummy food indoors.
