If you have to take out a sub-prime mortgage – DONT. Stop- don't buy.
Utilities – you may need to make a deposit to get your account started. You don't need a credit card. Rent – you may need to make a larger deposit to get started.

Maybe things have changed in the sub-prime mortgage market but we sure needed one when we moved to the US! We couldn't get a mortgage, utilities, a credit card or anything without the formal credit history. I was amazed how many places it popped up as a requirement.
