Maybe things have changed in the sub-prime mortgage market but we sure needed one when we moved to the US! We couldn't get a mortgage, utilities, a credit card or anything without the formal credit history. I was amazed how many places it popped up as a requirement.

If you read dave ramsey's book you will see that you actually do not need a formal “credit history” to buy a house. So I would say bye bye credit cards!!
