If your bank issues the debit card that looks like a visa, many merchants have no idea it is not a visa. Half of them run it through as a credit card.

it sound like you should sign up for the dave ramsey group, they give great advice on finances.we use to rent cars all the time before we had a credit card.we always use thrifty rental they had great deals and they were the only ones that accepted a debit card. i believe budget is also part of thrifty but not sure.the only thing is since it was debit card you had to sign an agreement having enough funds and they took a deposit of $150 but they usually would deposit it right back after 12-24hrs. so it wasn’t a big deal. This all might have changed, the last time we rented a car was in 2006 so I would check with them first and call around.I understand what your facing, I only have one cc and it’s paid in full, thank God for the 2007 Rebate checks.

Subject: Budget101.com : Questions about getting rid of all credit cards

Once again, I have charged my credit card up to the limit (luckily I
have a low limit on the card). I have decided that I no longer want to
have ANY credit cards. They have caused me nothing but trouble.

      I
have been in and out (mostly in) credit card debt for 25 years. It is
exhausting and there is no way I can live the rest of my life (probably
at least 40 years) like this. I would like to just use a debit card
instead and just not have any credit cards.

      Do you all have credit
      cards?

I am really afraid of having problems renting a car. I go on a few
trips each year, sometimes alone, and sometimes the rental car
companies require a credit card and will not accept a debit card. Is
there a way to get around this?

What do you all do? What about pre-
paid credit cards? Do rental car companies take them?

Other than the rental car problem, is there any other reason why I must
have a credit card? can a person really get by with just a debit card
and maybe a pre-paid visa? i just want to get out of this hell.

your help will be greatly appreciated.
