Hello Kerry and Everybody Else With “UPS Issues”,

I will try to make this as short as I can, but OH BOY do I have a UPS

      HORROR Story!

First, be glad you got the money and hopefully you can enjoy shopping

for replacement clothes. The reason you got a personal check is that

the UPS Stores are independently owned. Ups pays them, they pay you.

I have always packed my own shipments and then taken to UPS, shipped

and insured. That way I know how everything was packed in the box. I

also use LOTS of tape. My mother laughs when she gets a package because

it takes a while to find out how to open it, but I have never lost an

item or had a box open up.

My mother took a trip to Alabama for vacation and to have my

grandmother’s sewing machine and chair packed and shipped to me. My

aunt was giving things to family she wanted to them to have. She is

downsizing because of health and age, wanting to choose who gets what.

My mother took the items to the local UPS store for them to pack and

ship. She paid for packing materials, over weight shipping and

insurance. The chair had so much bubble wrap it took me an hour to get

it all off(payback, hehe!). The chair was fine. The sewing machine was

packed in 2 make shift boxes put together with tape, lined with 1″ foam

sheets, any areas that could open were taped closed with painter’s tape

by an aunt, NO BUBBLE wrap, and tons of packing peanuts. I was home

when the driver showed up and told him I would come out and help with

the boxes because I knew what they were and that they were HEAVY. First

box in the house, I went out to help with the second just in time to

see the driver FLIP the box. Not thinking anything of it, I didn’t take

pictures(you should do this at every step as I found out later) as I

opened the box. One corner of the sewing machine cabinet was broken.

Must likely from the FLIP. Now comes the BAD part. The claim! I have

given up on this sorry to say.

First, UPS wanted to pick-up the machine and take to their place. NO!

They did send a rep after I refused to let the driver that showed up

have the machine(I had told them on the phone not to send a driver).

Next, I had to deal with the UPS store in Alabama(that independent

thing). The store was fine, but Corp. UPS was telling them what had to

be done. If it was up to the independent store, they would pay the

claim, but not Corp. Corp wanted copies of everything(provided)and a

certified appraisal on the machine that costs minimum $200 and estimate

for repair(provided). Machine is worth $200 but was insured for $1000.

Repairs were estimated at $600. The big question! Why would I pay $200

or more for appraisal with NO GUARANTEE from UPS that they would pay me

more than the machine was worth. I wanted guarantees that UPS would pay

for appraisal and repairs. The Corp. claims office wouldn’t make those

quarantees in writing when I requested it and refused to talk with me

anymore about the claim. They (Corp.) said I had to speak with the

store in Alabama. Only the store could discuss the claim with Corp.

Now you know why I haven’t settled the claim. NO Guarantees and money

doesn’t grow on trees! If you have any ideas, I’m open.

Needless to say, I don’t use UPS anymore! Sorry this was so long. I

know this is different from your issue, but this info may save someone

      else from heartache and headache!

      Diane in IL
