Oh…and about the personality change….mostly with females, there is not much of a change at all. I never had any issues with males after they’ve been neutered either.

Our family took in a boy from France for just a week or so while he
was waiting for his parents to come and get him. His parents were
going to be vacationing in the states and decided to do it when he
was scheduled to be coming home. Then we had a young girl from
      Germany for almost 6 months.

Unfortunately, she ended up being sent
back home because we found out that she was anorexic and her help was
in jeopordy. Aside from that, she was a very nice girl and was very
willing to share things about her culture and country. She was also
      very smart.

They put her in the senior class at our school and it
was actually boring for her because she was the equivalent of our
11th grade in her country and was already doing second year college
level work. They are much higher educated than us. Then we had a
young lady from Uraguay, South America only for a few months because
she requested that she be moved to another home because ours was too
noisey for her with three kids in it.

The only bad thing I have to say is that it seems that these kids are
coming here with a different expectation to life in the US. I think
they think that all of us are wealthy, which is not the case. The
one from South America we had seemed to have a hard time with us not
being wealthy and being able to show her things and take her places.
She ended up going to a home where there was only one child her age
and the family was well to do and seemed to be happy there when we
      would see her.

Most of these kids do come from wealthier families
because they would not be able to afford it then. Yes, I would
recommend at least trying it. Think it over real well, though,
because it is a big commitment.

You are actually adding a new family
member to your house that comes from a different culture, does things
a certian way, and sometimes may have trouble communitcating with
you. They also have parents and family that they are going to miss
something terrible, so you may have to try to help them through that
too. Whatever organization that their foreign exchange is with, will
also be there to help you and your student get through whatever could
come up, even if it is something simple like communication.

      So, you
are not just given a student for the year and told “so long, enjoy
your year”. It really can be a fun and rewarding experience.

Are some cultures easier to have than other. I was told
that children from Asia are easier than from Europe. We are
      considering helping out.
