Profile visitor message notification

I have one of these and when I click on it, it just shows me my messages on my profile. When I try to respond to the message I cant. Why?

to reply you need to click on the username of the person that left you a message and respond on Their page, (if they have visitor notification enabled, some members choose not too). In which case, you could opt to send a pm instead.
