We have poison oak where we live & I have some medical background. I
have never heard of steroids as a recommendation for treatment. Is
it possible for you to call a clinic free of charge for their
recommendations?

Steroids are not usually given, especially to
children unless there are extreme circumstances. It would be worth
your while, and your poor child’s! to get a second opinion.
