Dave Ramsey talks about envelope system. The things that you tend to spend more money on use the envelope system. Like some people go to the gas station and get pop, candy etc. In that case have cash for gas only and than you are less likely to get the other stuff.
He also tels you to first pay for
Shelter – mortgage or rent
Transportation – car payment, gas and insurance
Before the end of the month sit down and make a list of your bills for next pay check. For food, eating out, doctor visits, perscription, blow money, kids school money, make envelopes and take out cash for those items (I think he is refering that items you purchase or places where you can be
at use cash). When you leave the house take the envelope with you. If you forgot the envelope go back home and get it. When you run out of money than you are done. He also tels us to cut up our credit cards and debit cards. His plan takes at least 3 months to start working. It is a lifetime change not a quick fix.
Years ago I had a friend that was widowed with 2 small kids at the age
of 50. Suddenly she was getting SS for the kids once a month and SHE
was in charge of paying the bills for the first time.
She paid all her bills as soon as she got the check. She bought a
months supply of groceries (she made out menus) – she loved to bake and
she had a garbage can (new) with sacks of sugar inside and another one
She had envelopes with Groceries (for milk, bread, produce later in the
month), haircuts, gasoline for car, special events (school pictures, or
carnival, holidays), savings (usually she had something she was saving
for) and that’s all I can remember now.
She’d put the cash money in each envelope and then she put the
envelopes in her locking freezer. Whatever she had left in her purse
was all the spending money she had for the month.
This system worked very well for her. KarenMO
