There are 3 girls in our family. My parents gave us each the same
amount of money ($1500) towards our weddings. At the time money was
very tight for us. I was able to do my entire wedding for $1500 (keep
in mind this was in 1991). I bought a regular dress at a dress store.
My husband wore a suit he bought for under $150 and wore many times
after the wedding. For flowers we got only 2 bouquets and boutineers
and corsages for family members. We only had a best man and a maid of
honour. They just wore a nice suit and dress they already had. Only
close family and friends came. We did not have special invitations, we
just called people personally. We were married at a church at 11:00am.
We decorated with things left from a friend who was married before us.
We had a reception at my sister’s place. We had a buffet lunch. Most
of the food we made the day before. We had sandwiches, cold cuts,
cheeses, salads, vegetables and dip. We had trays of squares made by a
local bakery and we had a regular slab cake decorated to look like a
wedding cake ($40). Drinks were pop, juice etc. The only alcohol we
served was champagne to toast with. We did not have a dance or DJ, we
just made tapes ahead of time and played them for background music.
Pictures were taken by my uncle. We didn’t have posed professional
portraits but we got some nice shots. I made the favours and they were
tulle bages of mints with ribbon and a card thanking people for
sharing the day with us. After the wedding I sent out pretty thank you
cards from the dollar store. We had a very nice, intimate wedding. At
the time we thought that in the future when we had more money we would
renew our vows and have a big party with a dream reception, dance,
catering etc. As the years have gone by we have never bothered. We
always have had something better to put our money towards. I have had
no regrets about my small, low cost wedding.
