I just found this site last night and I’m already absorbing so much. I quit my job to stay home with our autistic 6yo and toddler, which has come with more challenges than we originally anticipated. We were informed that if we dropped my income, we would qualify for state assistance with food.
I kept my job because I wasn’t “that person,” but the cost of childcare got to be so high that the providers were making more than I was. So, a year later I finally quit. And we’ve been denied assistance because the way the numbers are calculated makes my husband’s income look $500 higher than it really is (I’ve heard this is a problem for military families in our area).
In short, my food budget comes in at less than $200 a month. I did my first grocery shop for $50 for the week and actually succeeded! I’m hoping to learn more here and get to know the great people here!
