Hi Kat,
I am a mom to 5 kids ages 8-13. Two are teens and
they eat a LOT! We are on a tight budget, and I’ve
managed to get our grocery bill down to $150 a week.
I do it primarily using Aldi’s and Dollar
General/Stroehmann’s Outlet as my backups.
IF you have an Aldi’s near you, go to http://www.aldi.com.
They have hundreds of really good recipes there that
kids like! I printed out about 40 of them, then put
them in plastic sleeves in a 3 ring binder. (I had
this stuff on hand, left over from buying school
supplies last fall.)
Each week, I let each of the kids choose 1 or 2
recipes from the book. Then I go to the Aldi’s site
and checkmark the ones they chose. It prints out a
shopping list for these items. After that, I go
through the kitchen and cross anything off the list
that I already have. We’ve liked all of the recipes,
except we do find that sometimes you need to spice
them up a bit more.
Doing this has saved us a small fortune. Prior to
doing this we spent $850-1000 a month on food.
Once I have my list, I put an approximate dollar amt.
next to each item. That way, if I go over I realize
it early on in the shopping trip. Also, ALWAYS pay
cash, don’t use your debit card. You will be so much
more aware of how you are spending your money.
If you don’t have an Aldi’s, maybe there is another
type of discount store out there where you can do
something similar.
Good luck to you!
