Sugru is a flexible silicone material that hardens as it cures. It’s relatively expensive, as far as materials go, but here is a simple, cheap way to make your own.
You need 1 tube of clear silicone caulking- basically the kind that smells like vinegar while it’s drying.
Cornstarch
Rubber Gloves
A small container to mix it inHow much cornstarch you use depends on how fast you want it to dry. Start with small amounts, a tablespoon or two of Each & mix it with a popsicle stick. If you need larger amounts, use a paint stick.I generally use 1 part silicone to 1 part cornstarch
This will give off an acetic acid smell, so if you can do it outside, all the better. Mixing it 1:1 will result in a putty like mixture within 2-4 minutes of mixing and can be smoothed just like sugru. It will start hardening within 10 minutes.
If you want a longer drying/working time use a mix of 1 part silicone to 4 parts cornstarch. This will give you about 30 minutes of working time, depending on the humidity in your area.If you wish to color your homemade sugru-like compound you can add 5-6 drops of Linseed based Oil Paints (in the crafts department at Walmart, Target, Michaels, Hobby Lobby, etc). Once your molded homemade sugru-like compound has dried, you can lightly sand it to smooth it further if you want a precise surface area.
