This is a really fun crafty science project to do with kids, but you really have to make sure that you supervise well, it uses a it of ammonia.
Magic Crystal Gardens
6 tb Salt
6 tb Water
1 tb Ammonia + 2 tsp
2 Pieces charcoal, smashed into small chunks
Small piece of sponge, wet and wrung out completely
Use a disposable but waterproof container. Place the sponge piece About 2″x2″, Add the charcoal and spread out evenly over the sponge. Combine the salt, water, and ammonia in a bowl, and pour over charcoal.
Sprinkle a few drops of food coloring over the whole concoction. Place the container on a shelf low enough for children to see, and let them watch it grow.
After a few days the thing will be puffed with crystals.
On a side note, we did this in elementary school when I was a kid and I brought it home and stuck it in my closet and forgot about it. A few weeks later I had massive crystals everywhere. I thought it would just “dry up and go away” like a dead houseplant, but it didn’t.

Oh! I’m excited to do this. The steps are simple enough.
How did you get rid of the crystals from your closet?
