The cooler in the trunk really helps. You can buy frozen foods and do other

errands while you are out at the same time, saving time, money and gasoline.

Years ago, we used to regularly do our grocery shopping in the middle of the

night. I am talking about 1-4 a.m. at the 24 hour grocery store. Yes, we

shopped around the workers restocking the shelves, but otherwise, we had the

store to ourselves. We got in and out pretty quick.

Another tip: Shop when the most popular TV shows are on. The stores are

EMPTY. Years ago, we used to go when E.R. was on Thursday night. Everyone was

home drooling over George Clooney. I try my best to avoid the grocery stores on

Saturday. That is when you encounter the “tourists” – reading every label, when

they know full well they are going to buy the same brand they always get, be it

store brand or Hunt’s Ketchup. Wandering aimlessly around. Get real. It does

not take 4 hours to grocery shop if you have a list and know your store.

If you are home during the day, go to the stores before lunchtime or at the

hour that school is letting out or at the “dinner hour”, as most stores are

slower then. Since I work full-time, we eat dinner later than 5 pm. However,

on days I am home, that is the hour I go to the store. In this area, stay at

home Moms like to plan dinner for 5-5:30 pm, stores are really light then.
