I will try to explain LOSS LEADERS for you from the way I understand it. If I

am wrong, please someone, correct me

A grocery store will have a sale in their ads that will draw you into the

store, say soup at 10 cents a can, regularly 80 cents a can, so you will rush to

the store for it. The store figures, while you are here, you will pick up other

things, more expensive things, things not on sale and they will make money.

It’s like dangling a carrot in front of the consumers.

Some people only buy what is advertised on sale. If you are lucky, you will

have a coupon that is for the items in the ads, thus making a better deal.

Part of the reason for the grocery list is so that you don’t wander aimlessly

around, picking up whatever looks good. You plan your menu so you have a map of

what to buy, how many, etc. and make best use of the time and money.

Grocery stores spends lots and lots of money trying to figure out how to keep

you in their stores as long as possible. If you stay longer, you will spend

more money. Proven fact. The layout of the store is designed to keep you

there. Think about it. Close your eyes and envision your favorite grocery

store. Where is the milk in relation to the bread? Where are the diapers? The

pet food? The fresh fruits and veggies? Ice cream? In our stores locally,

they are on completely opposite ends of the store. Ice cream is in aisle 4; ice

cream cones are in aisle 14. You literally have to go all over the place,

passing numerous other things just to get ice cream and cones. They used to be

      in the same aisle.

Then, there are the end caps. Stuff that is placed just to grab your

attention, make you buy on impulse. If you weren’t prepared, you will just grab

“just one or two” of these, usually not the best price; on your list; or on

sale. You are not supposed to check your list to see if this is an item you

need. You are just supposed to pick up a couple. GOTCHA! You spend an extra

few dollars. If you don’t need it (READ YOUR LIST), you just overspent. The

end caps are usually for junk food I notice. Or something your kids will LOVE.
