Usually, the reason gas stations do this at the pump, is because you
charge the card before you pump the gas. Gas pumps have a limit
listed on them (at least here in Michigan) as to how much can be
charged in a single transaction by certain cards. For instance, Visa
limits it to either $50 or $75, and Mastercard does the opposite.
They put a hold on the amount, you pump it, then they adjust the
amount that is charged to the card- but sometimes, not till the next
business day.
