Homemade Laundry Detergent ?

Lucky you. Whenever we visit family in Iowa, we try to make a side trip (which
is out of the way) to an Amish settlement in Kalona, Iowa where we visit a
country store where they sell bulk food and household items. I really like
these kinds of stores and wish there were some local to the Missouri/Kansas
area.

laundry softener

recipe #1

2 Cups White Vinegar
2 Cups Baking Soda
4 Cups Water

Combine slowly and carefully over sink. The baking soda and vinegar will
fizz.
Pour into plastic bottle, cover, and shake.
*Hint – Reuse your “Downy” bottle.

Use 1/4 cup in the final rinse or in a “Downy Ball”.

2-3 Cups Water
1 Cup Liquid Fabric Softener
Large Sponge

Combine water and liquid softener. Cut sponge in 1/2 and keep in liquid. When
drying clothes, remove sponge, squeeze out excess liquid and place in dryer
with clothes.

When dry, just place sponge back in liquid to be used for next
load.

You can also use these products alone to soften:
Plain White Vinegar – Add 1/2 cup to final rinse.
Baking Soda – Add 1/4 cup to final rinse.
Regular Fabric Softener – Dilute and use normally.
Hair Conditioner or Cream Rinse – Pour 1 tablespoon into damp washcloth and
toss in with clothes.

2 Quarts Water

Mix well, and store in spray bottle.

1/4 Cup Borax or Washing Soda
2 Cups Cold Water

Sponge on and let dry, or soak the fabric in Borax mixture before washing in
soap and cold water.

For Heavily Stained Clothing

**NOTE: This is for use with white cotton, nylon and polyester only.

1/2 Cup Liquid Laundry Detergent (Use HomeMade)
1/2 Cup Electric Dishwasher Detergent
1/2 Cup Non-Chlorinated Bleach or Ammonia, Not Both

Soak clothes in washing machine overnight or until stains disappear. Launder
as usual.

You can also use these products alone to remove stains:
Plain White Vinegar
Hydrogen Peroxide
Fels Naptha
Castile Soap

I just made a 2 gal. batch of the fels naptha laundry detergent (with
irish spring). I washed some colored clothes in it and they smelled
great.

Now I got to try it on some dirty socks to see how well it
deals with stains, dirt and grime. Can anyone else that has used it,
give me their opinion of the make your own detergent? If you haven’t
tried it, i think the recipe is on the website: felsnaptha.com

Fels Naphtha Laundry Soap

Water
1/3 bar Fels Naphtha soap — grated
1/2 cup washing soda
1/2 cup borax

Fels Naphtha – Put in a pan with 3 pints of water, and heat until dissolved: 1/3 bar Fels Naphtha Laundry Soap, grated, Stir in: 1/2 cup Washing soda, 1/2 cup Borax. Mix until melted. Remove from heat.

In a two gallon bucket, put 1 quart of hot water, then add the soap. Mix. Fill bucket with cold water.

Mix until well blended. Set aside for 24 hours. Its will gel up.

Use 1/2 cup for each load.

1/2 bar of Fels Naphtha soap
1 cup of Borax
1 cup of Washing soda

Grate the bar of ivory and add half a bar of grated fels naphtha . Follow the general instructions for the Fels Naphtha Soap

Robbyn’s Homemade Laundry Soap

1 Bar Ivory Soap (plain — pure soap, to fragrance, etc.)
1 Cup Washing Soda (not baking soda)

Fill a large bucket or container with hot tap water. (I use a 1 1/2 gallon
bucket leftover from the kids Legos..). Set aside.

Grate bar of soap into
a sauce pan. Add water just to cover. Heat, stirring constantly, until
soap is dissolved.

Add soap/water mixture to the hot water in the bucket.
Stir to combine. Then (do not reverse this order) add 1 cup of Washing Soda
and stir. As this cools it will turn into a bucket full of white gelatinous
soap (thickness depends on size of bucket used).

To use, I put one cup into a full load of laundry. Sometimes (when I think
of it) I add a handful of baking soda to the load and I use vinegar in a
Downy Ball as softener.

I made the “liquid laundry detergent 1” found on this site. At first I was skeptical and did not really believe that it would work, but it is cheap to make so I gave it a go. I am totally hooked now!

Not only was it exciting to make but the results was amazing. My clothes came out cleaner and brighter. The part I loved the most was the price, I saved 90% of what I normally spend on laundry detergent!!

I have been making my own laundry detergent for over a year now, using Borateem, Arm & Hammer washing powders, and bar soap. I have found that deodorant soaps(bar) work just as well as the Naphtda bar soap does. They make a pleasant smelling powdered detergent.

I also make my own dishwasher detergent, using same products with unsweetened lemon/orange koolade packets for aroma.
