Does anyone have any good ideas about how to best get land to start out on? Particularly in Florida?

You’ll have to look outside city limits. I’m in the same region as you, and we had a lot of difficulty finding land. The amount of land you want will determine just how far out you have to look.

There are a lot of places within city limits or very close to that are 1/4 acre. If you want a half acre or more, you’re going to have to start looking at least 3 miles from the Lakeland boarder. When you’re looking at the properties, pay close attention to the kind of plants growing as they’ll tell you just how wet the land is.

If you see sandspurs, you know that it’s going to be very dry and will be difficult to farm on unless you bring in soil or farm in pots/planters. If the land is covered in lush grasses and other plants, odds are it stays extremely wet and may end up flooding during the rainy season. If you go with a mobile home, you’ll pay a lot less in taxes.

Don’t just look at realtor sites–look for properties that are for sale by owner, or just drive around in an area you like and find signs. Don’t be afraid to ask neighbors about what kind of internet, cable TV, cell reception, etc, they have.

Any other Qs, feel free to ask. It took us a year and half to find a piece of land that made us happy. :stars:
